The National Committee of YMCAs of China Held the Centennial Celebrations in Shanghai

On October 18, the National Committee of YMCAs of China held its centennial celebrations in Shanghai. Mr. Jiang Jianyong, Vice Minister of the State Administration of Religious Affairs gave an important speech at the centennial ceremony. In his speech, Mr. Jiang highly acknowledged the National YMCA for its historical contribution and encouraged it to always uphold the flags of patriotism and socialism, always stick to the principle of independence and autonomy, always revolve around the center and practice its mission, always maintain the stability and harmony of the society, and to play more active roles in socialist modernization with the centennial ceremony as a new starting point.
During the celebrations, the symposium on “Practice of YMCA Values in Contexts” was held. Participants from YMCAs of China, U.S.A, Canada, Korea, Singapore, Hongkong and Macao shared the experiences of their contextual practice.
The opening ceremony of the website of the National Committee of YMCAs of China and National Committee of YWCAs of China was also launched during the centennial ceremony. Mr. Jiang Jianyong together with leaders of the National YMCA and National YWCA touched the crystal ball kicking off the opening ceremony of the website.
Leaders of All-China Youth Federation, China Christian Council and the National Committee of YWCAs of China also presented at the ceremony to convey their congratulatory messages.
Representatives of the Department of the United Front, religious departments and All-China Youth Federation also attended the ceremony at invitations.
The YMCA is an international organization of social services and was introduced into China in the 19th century. The National Committee of YMCAs of China was established in 1912. The YMCA advocated the comprehensive development of the youth through scientific lectures, sports, cultural recreation, mass education, civic education and the Christian students fellowship and other activities. And YMCA was also contributive in terms of disaster relief, anti-Japanese national salvation etc. After resuming its work in 1980, the National Committee of YMCAs of China together with local YMCAs carried out a large number of programs in community services, education and training, public charity, environmental protection, peace education and international exchanges.
The centennial anniversary of the National Committee of YMCAs of China is not only to commemorate but also to look forward. All the leaders and guests present have great expectations on the future of the National Committee of YMCAs of China. We will continue to adhere to its mission, strengthen its conviction, explore and innovate, and to serve the community, making greater contribution to the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, the progress of human society and world peace.
